چکیده

Gonococcal strains less sensitive to penicillin have been found in a high proportion of patients failing to respond to penicillin treatment (Curtis and Wilkinson, 1958; Reyn, 1961; Gjessing and Odegaard, 1 962a; Laird, 1963; Klaschka, Hannemann, and Ranike, 1963). In a series of female patients treated with two injections of 1 2 mega units procaine penicillin on consecutive days, the treatment failed in 4 per cent. of those infected with penicillin-sensitive strains and in 51 per cent. of those infected with strains resistant to streptomycin and less sensitive to penicillin. This difference was not found if the treatment consisted of four doses of 1 * 5 mega units given during 2 days (Rantasalo, Tammilehto, and Wallenius, 1962). A possible measure to prevent the spread of the less sensitive strains of gonococci would be the use in all cases of a dosage high enough to cure those infected with the less sensitive strains. The present paper reports the results of treating both female and male gonorrhoea patients with high doses of penicillin.

Spiramycin in the Treatment of Acute Gonorrhoea.

Introduction The treatment of gonorrhoea in Denmark is as yet no serious therapeutic problem, as the majority of gonococcal infections can be cured by penicillin. Nevertheless, in an increasing number ofcases a higher dosage of penicillin is required than was the case just a few years ago. At the Dermato-venereological Department of the University Hospital, a single treatment dose of 300,000 un...

A comparison of the in vitro sensitivity of gonococci to penicillin with the results of treatment.

The great success which followed the adoption of penicillin as the drug of choice for the treatment of gonorrhoea, coming as it did at a time when the organism was becoming increasingly resistant to the sulphonamides, led to hopes that the control of gonorrhoea might be in sight. Although in Great Britain and other countries there was a marked decline in the number of reported cases in the imme...

Treatment of gonorrhoea by one oral dose of ampicillin and probenecid combined.

It has been shown (Odegaard, 1962) by sensitivity testing in vitro that the effect of ampicillin on most gonococcal strains is somewhat weaker than that of penicillin G, but the effect on strains less sensitive is better with ampicillin than with penicillin G. Reyn and Bentzon (1968), in support of this, found that the 50 per cent. inhibitory concentrations for the naturally-occurring more sens...

Treatment of acute gonococcal urethritis in Bangkok, Thailand.

In most areas of the world, Neisseria gonorrhoeae has become increasingly less sensitive to antimicrobials, both in vitro and in vivo, as discussed by Willcox (1970), Martin, Lester, Price, and Schmale (1970), and Sparling (1972). Because of this trend, the doses of penicillin necessary to obtain satisfactory cure rates have greatly increased. The current recommendation by the Venereal Diseases...

Penicillin resistance in gonorrhoea.

The incidence of gonorrhoea in Great Britain reached its peak in 1946, one year after the second World War had ended. Thereafter it declined sharply and continued to do so until 1955, when for the first time since the war the Annual Report of the Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health (1957) indicated an increase in the number of patients with'gonorrhoea attending the clinics. The rise...
